Speaker: Mary-Margaret McMahon, Sidewalk Labs Toronto
Sidewalk Labs is an urban innovation company that helps cities tackle their biggest challenges. Last June, Sidewalk Labs submitted a proposal to Waterfront Toronto to create a neighbourhood of the future on the eastern waterfront. The proposal aims to shorten commute times for families, make housing more affordable, and create a new standard for a healthier planet. Mary-Margaret McMahon, Sidewalk Labs’ Director of Community will join us to discuss Sidewalk’s plans for Toronto and their unique approach to addressing urban challenges.
Mary-Margaret McMahon is Director of Community at Sidewalk Labs. A natural born leader, Mary-Margaret McMahon was a strong City Builder long before she was elected to Toronto City Council. She worked tirelessly as a passionate volunteer on numerous projects and for varied organizations in her community ranging from streetscaping beautification projects to environmental education and awareness to food security initiatives.
During her eight years as Toronto City Councillor for Beaches – East York, Mary-Margaret has held a variety of critical roles and served on several important boards at City Hall including Chair of Parks and Environment committee, Mayor’s Executive committee, Design Exchange, Young People’s Theatre, Winter Stations Jury Chair, Toronto Music Advisory committee, and many more. Her proudest achievements include implementing Toronto’s first climate change adaptation plan (TransformTO), spearheading the Laneway Suites planning policy, helping to create the Vision Zero road safety plan, and strongly advocating for Term Limits.
Mary-Margaret has a knack for bringing people together and inspiring them. Whether it is working across party lines on the floor of Council to achieve a unanimous vote or empowering residents to form advocacy groups to implement change in their neighbourhoods, she ensures everyone’s voices are heard and ideas valued. With her endless energy, creativity, and charisma, she has been able to help make Toronto a more livable city.
In her former life, Mary-Margaret lived in Japan. She studied at Carleton University, University of Toronto, and Rotman School of Management.
